Ok, so that's how you play open preflop poker at this level. It's going to be a lot of folding, but you need to play tight at these tables, because no one ever folds. The situation is a little different if someone has acted in front of you. This does take a little bit of judgement on your part. You need to decide whether or not this player is tight. If they are, you need to respect their raises. Be careful if someone raises from first position, as this is usually a good hand. You also need to be aware of stack sizes at this point and follow the 5-10 rule. What is the 5-10 rule? Glad you asked. The 5-10 rule means that you should call a raise with a speculative hand (suited aces and small pairs) if you're investing less than 5% of your stack (or his, whoever's is the smallest), and should fold if you're investing more than 10%. If it's somewhere inbetween you need to use your best judgement. Here's your standards.

if say i do hit the set , probably only one of the stacks would be mine , so should i setmine under this sort of conditions?

  1. i don't think calling there is +ev in the long run. my default would be to call anything up to 10% with SPP.

  2. the 3bet is quite big so i dont think u have the right odds. folding is ok.

  3. so even with 2 full stacks and being in position makes this not worth it ?

it costs me another $2.80 , it closes the action , there is 8.40 already in the pot , 2 full stacks that i might stack off if i get my set

how much is too much ? what is the threshold ?

  4. $2.8 is more than 10% of your stack alr and u flop a set in about 12% of the time. using the ev formula for your call, it is -ev in the long run. however, there are some situations where u can compensate a little ev due to the implied odds. now taking implied odds into consideration, 31.19 : 2.8 which is 11.14 : 1 which means u need to win 8.2% of the time to breakeven. hence u can conclude u neither have immediate or implied odds to call.

  5. very much have to depend on whether u think u can extract enuff from the 2 players if u hit
also +EV or -EV is very marginal
so dun waste so much time on it
    as in
in the LR, it wont matter much
sometimes u err on the -EV side, sometimes on the +EV side
    its ok one
u just need to noe roughly

  6. sorry made a mistake. u have implied odds to call but that's if he is always stacking off 100bb. otherwise its just super -ev

  7. so mathematically its ok to call , its ok to fold i guess , by read , if i have notes that says he stacks off with overs / dun let go of such hands , then i should be going in i guess ?

  8. ya u can say so. but no one can be sure. everytime he stacks off u're only gaining that extra 3.8% (12-8.2) in ev. so imagine if u hit and don't get paid off.
